Simplifying New Year’s Resolutions with One Word

New Year’s resolutions seem so daunting to me. What do you pick? It’s like the produce section of your grocery store. Just toss a pound of kindness, a package of exercise and a few bunches of happiness into the cart and be gone. The problem remains when you get home and have to put everything away.

If not refrigerated, the pound of happiness will spoil, the package of exercise will grow moldy and your happiness will dehydrate into a mass of icky goo. Resolutions won’t last without proper care. For me, too many resolutions tend to crowd my imaginary refrigerator. I’ll never see the happiness in the back corner if I don’t address the gooey kindness in the front.

How do I resolve my clutter? How can I get everything on the same shelf?

I know! I’m going to make smoothies! Combine all my resolutions into a sweet beverage, drink daily. I’m going for a one word resolution this year.

Reset.

One word. One mental shift to daily occurrences.

  • The double chocolate cheesecake really didn’t need a second serving. Reset. Tomorrow will be more healthy.
  • Issues from the past emerge into the present. Reset. Put them in their proper time perspective.
  • The puppy chewed on your favorite blanket, again, sigh. Reset. The puppy is healthy.
  • A car pulls out in front of you as you are running late. Reset. No accident occurred.
  • A situation has lasted longer than it should have. Reset. It’s time to change.
  • Slept late again. Reset. Try a different alarm.
  • A conversation long overdue. Reset. Make it happen.
  • Feeling misunderstood. Reset. Seek the root of your feelings.
  • Skipped an exercise session. Reset. Evaluate your schedule, see what’s not working.
  • Someone is unkind to you. Reset. They are merely having a bad day, nothing personal.
  • The cherry pie lands upside down on the floor. Reset. Hot cocoa makes all things better. Especially with 25 mini marshmallows.

This year I resolve to focus upon my one word. A word that will be different for us all. I’ve been seeing words from others that include courage, bravery, peace, love, delight… Words that are as unique as the individuals we were created to be.

It’s time to move beyond the exercise more, save money, eat less rhetoric. Let’s peer out of our windows of perception, grab a microfiber cloth and rub the grime of past hurts away. The possibilities that await us in the new year are infinite.
